The role
A seat on a trading desk making prices in listed products, where the day is spent managing live risk rather than writing research notes. Training is on the job, beside traders who are running the same book.
What the work involves
- Quote and manage risk in a defined set of listed products
- Price flow as it arrives, and hedge the exposure that follows
- Work with researchers and developers to improve the models behind the quotes
- Review the day's risk, fills and misses with the desk
What firms look for
- Strong quantitative background, typically a numerate degree
- Comfort with probability and mental arithmetic under time pressure
- Evidence you make decisions well with incomplete information
- Programming literacy, usually Python; production coding is not the job
- A measured trading record helps but is not required
